Why most mattress tests go wrong
In a busy showroom, people sit on the edge of a bed, lie back for ten seconds with a salesperson standing over them, and decide. That tells you almost nothing about how you'll feel at 3 AM. A good test takes a bit longer and copies how you really sleep.
What to bring
- Comfortable clothes you don't mind lying down in.
- Your partner, if you share a bed. You'll both be sleeping on it.
- Your pillow, if you're attached to it. It changes how a mattress feels more than people expect.
- Your measurements, if you're unsure what size fits your room or your current frame.
- A rough budget, so we can start you on the right floor models.
How to test each mattress
- Take your shoes off and lie down in your usual sleep position.
- Stay at least five minutes. First impressions often fade once your body settles in.
- Roll over a few times. Notice whether it's easy to change positions or feels like climbing out of a hole.
- Test with your partner. Have one person roll over and see how much the other feels it.
- Sit on the edge. If you sit on the side of the bed to get dressed or get up, the edge should feel steady.
- Go back to your favorite. After trying a few, lie on your top pick one more time before deciding.
Questions worth asking
- What comfort level is this: plush, medium or firm?
- Will it work on an adjustable base?
- Do I need a box spring, a low-profile box spring or a platform frame?
- What are my delivery and setup options, or can I take it home today?
- Can I spread the cost out with a payment plan?
Why we work by appointment
This is exactly why we only see customers by appointment. You get the store to yourself and as much time as you need on every bed, with Sarah or Nick there to answer questions when you want them, and not hovering when you don't.
